Jackie Chan's First Strike

(#215)
Summary: Action-god Jackie Chan does his best James Bond impression with "First Strike", an ecstatic sequel to the classic "Supercop". The bare-bones plot has Chan in pursuit of international terrorists, but the narrative quickly gives way to an unceasing barrage of insane stunt work (including a nitro-fuelled ski chase and a grandiose fight scene set inside a functioning shark tank). As with most of the ageing star's recent films, there is more of an emphasis placed on big, impersonal (albeit impressive) stunts rather than the close-up combat that made him famous; but the end result is still a must-see rush for longtime fans and a great introduction for newcomers eager to see what all the well-deserved fuss is about. The scene where Jackie takes on multiple goons while armed only with a ladder is one of his most jaw-dropping set pieces ever--and that's saying quite a lot. Be sure to stick around for the closing credits of gags gone awry, which graphically prove that Chan is truly the hardest working man in show business. "--Andrew Wright"

James Bond - Goldeneye
(#216)
Summary: The film that marked the successful rebirth of the 007 franchise, which had laid dormant for over half a decade, "GoldenEye" remains Pierce Brosnan's finest moment as Britain's most famous secret agent.
The plot? This one involves the Russian mafia, a rogue agent and a powerful satellite, although realistically it's the standard 007 formula at work. Thus, there's gadgets, girls and plenty of action, with the plot trying to squeeze in where there's room.
There are several reasons though why "GoldenEye" works so well. Firstly, it successfully ushered in a new cast, with Judi Dench's M, Samantha Bond's Moneypenny and Robbie Coltrane's Valentin Zukovsky all marking their 007 movie debut. Then, the baddies are strong, although Sean Bean's ruthless 006 is overshadowed by Famke Janssen's career-making performance as Xenia Onatopp. And then there's that vital 007 ingredient--the action. From a stunning pre-credits sequence, which is arguably the film's highlight, through to several high-tempo action moments throughout the rest of the film, it's highly enjoyable stuff, and impossible to resist.
Finally, there's Brosnan. Arguably the most successful Bond since Sean Connery defined the role, his laid back, hard-edged charm serves him well, and he never looked more comfortable as 007 as he does in his maiden outing.
In short, "GoldenEye" is not only a terrific Bond movie, it's a strong action movie full stop. --"Jon Foster"

(#217)
Summary: Elliot Carver (Jonathan Pryce, DE-LOVELY, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN) is a global telecommunications mogal who has just to break into the Chinese market to completely cover the whole world with his broadcasting. To get a stranglehold in this evasive market, he stages a plot to try and get the British and the Chinese to start a war, upon which he would report and take pictures. As a result, a British warship is sunk, and M (Dame Judi Dench) sends James Bond (Pierce Brosnan) to the area to discover what is going on and to put an end to it. It is in doing so that he meets and teams up with what could be an equivalent to him, Chinese agent Wai Lin (Michelle Yeoh; CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON; MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA; POLICE STORY III: SUPERCOP), who was reportedly very popular with female Bond fans!
Also featuring Geoffrey Palmer (who at the time was starring in a TV series with Dench, AS TIME GOES BY -- the scenes with these two together are very funny), Teri Hatcher (TV's DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES) as Paris Carver (Elliot's wife, who once had a relationship with Bond) and Joe Don Baker (reprising his role as Jack Wade from GOLDENEYE), the film doesn't have quite the same level of enjoyment that GOLDENEYE had (and Jonathan Pryce's villain is hardly that much of a threat to Bond), but is still enjoyable enough to recommend it. Desmond Llewelyn returns as Q yet again, giving his usual gadgets, in particular a remote-controlled car, with the controls in Bond's mobile phone.
This Ultimate Edition, like the GOLDENEYE one, contains a first for the UK public: the UNCUT version, as stated on the cover under the title. The BBFC waived all of their cuts applied to the previous 12-rated versions, allowing this uncut version under their Different Versions at Different Categories Policy 2004. As a result, the film is now rated 15; the fight sounds are restored to their original louder volume, and another restoration is that Wai Lin now uses a weapon that the BBFC didn't allow when the film was originally classified, but do now allow under newer guidelines.
There is also a Bonus Disc crammed with various features, but the fact that the film is now uncut should attract loyal fans, especially if, for whatever reason, they didn't buy any of the previous versions.

(#220)

Summary: "Arguing With Myself", a recorded live performance of ventriloquist Jeff Dunham, portrays a comedian whose revival of an old-fashioned art has made ventriloquism more relevant to modern societal concerns. Starring his six main characters, from Bubba Jay, a Nascar-obsessed hick, to Peanut, a flamboyant gay monkey, Dunham's puppets have dirty but relatively inoffensive senses of humor that mock the American Dream. One can easily see why Jay Leno champions Dunham, as his skits contain a similar sly sarcasm disguised as wholesome teasing aimed at men indebted to their ugly wives, for example, or people who live their lives working in cubicles. At times, though, Dunham's humor seems to lose its ironic distance, especially as he interacts with puppets like Jose Jalapeño, a Cuban chile pepper, or Sweet Daddy D, a Black pimp, both reliant on the antiquated humor once popularized in cartoons by racial caricature. Since the entire audience in the film is white, it is difficult to assess whether or not African-Americans or Latinos would find Dunham funny. In other words, Dunham's humor isn't overtly offensive enough to make fun of ethnic heritage. However, his skills as a ventriloquist alone make him a fascinating entertainer, and anyone interested in how puppetry and ventriloquism has progressed over the decades would benefit from watching Dunham bring life to his wooden friends. Summary: Ventriloquist Jeff Dunham's second live-performance DVD, "Spark of Insanity", is much funnier than his first, "Arguing With Myself", perhaps because his new puppets allow him to cover more controversial territory beyond skits about family beefs and office humor. Though some puppets reappear, like the beloved Peanut, a purple monkey who loves wordplay, new characters emerge as the stars of this hour-long stand-up show. A tense laughter ripples through the audience, for example, when Dunham announces his wish to talk with a terrorist as he brings out Achmed the Dead Terrorist, a turban-sporting skeleton who's refrain is "I will kill you!" Previous show star, Jose Jalapeño, a Mexican chili pepper on a stick, returns for a discussion about whether the puppet has a green card. If his racial jokes rode a line slightly too Caucasian to clarify his point of view before, Dunham has achieved real satire in "Spark of Insanity", showing his audience how ridiculous it is to create stereotypes of any sort. Additionally, Dunham mocks his own culture with Walter, a grumpy old white man whose parental chiding rings true for many. Moreover, Dunham impresses with his ventriloquism skills, and shows off some new vocalization techniques that will stun anyone interested in this fascinating art. --"Trinie Dalton"

Summary: Here's a film that tries too hard, yet still manages to be endearing & entertaining. My primary criticism is the same I had for the television show, Veronica Mars... I have yet to encounter a teenager who's that witty, intelligent and/or worldly. Cute little knocked-up Juno belts out one-liners like a seasoned comedian.
If you looked up 'indy' in the dictionary it would probably say: see Juno. It's this year's Little Miss Sunshine and, sadly, it feels a little formulaic these days...
Three stars is the best I can do.

Summary: This has to be, without a doubt, one of the finest adventures of all time, with a little handy work from Steven Speilberg and co.
Being a little lad at the time, Jurrasic Park totally caught my imagination. It was a movie that sparked other kids imaginations too, and led to the release of many amazing toys being produced, from a rubber T-Rex, to the 'lesser' little raptor I recieved one christmas instead... hmm
As with alot of Hollywoods best films, the plot is relatively simple, and is now all too familiar after all these years. A billionaire (Richard Attenborough) decides to create a theme park based entirely around a dinosaurs. Although the film actually starts with the park being pretty much complete, invited guests are sent around the park to evaluate it, and learn that the generation of dinosaurs come from mosquitos through an interesting process - nicely shown though a funny cartoon!
But as mathematician Jeff Golblumm soon explains, humans from the current age and dinosaurs from millions of years ago can't adapt, as they soon find out!... For 1993, the effects where unbelievable. Terminator 2 had only come out not long before, and too see how special effects had changed even since then was incredbible. Its fair to that the T-Rex in particular, on its first 'sighting' in the film, would still out-do computer effects today. It not only looks photo realistic, but the way it interacts with the environment, from crashing down bushes/trees to even puddles is sensational. Of course, the acting takes just a big role, and its brilliant. Sam Neill plays a great adventurer, while Jeff Goldblumm is great as he tries to make a theory out of everything.
Its a film for everyone and on this dvd, you get some nice extra features, including some footage on the making of it, which explains how they used animotronics in certain scenes etc.
A truly perfect film, and Speilbergs previous film, Hook, was also an excellent film, and I reccomend both!

Jurassic Park: The Ultimate Collection 4 DVD Boxset

(#228)
Languages: English, Hungarian
Summary: It may have been over ten years since Michael Crichton and Steven Spielberg’s dinosaurs first trampled all over the global box office, and its sequels may have failed to fully match the standards set by the original. Yet the "Jurassic Park Trilogy: Ultimate Edition" still brings together a wildly entertaining trio of films, in a very welcome DVD collection.
The basics by now are well known. Eccentric billionaire John Hammond employs scientists to bring dinosaurs back to life, with fairly impressive results. Not everything goes to plan, though, and when his dinosaur-ravaged theme park eventually goes amok in the original "Jurassic Park", it’s a proper blockbuster rollercoaster ride, whose influence is still being felt in big budget Hollywood movies today.
"The Lost World" moves the action to Site B, a mysterious location where much of the behind-the-scenes work was done for the creation of the original theme park. That makes it extra dangerous, and again, is a fine excuse for some excellent set pieces. It’s arguably the weakest of the three films, and it’s certainly the flabbiest, but it still entertains, and entertains well.
Spielberg handed the director’s chair over to "Jumanji" helmer Joe Johnston for the third film, and it proved a wise decision. Johnston keeps his running time brief, cutting out much of the back-story to focus on the lizard-based action. And save for a fairly sudden finale, he delivers the trademark "Jurassic Park" tension and rampaging action in spades.
In short, the "Jurassic Park Trilogy: Ultimate Edition" is a fitting testament to a trio of blockbuster movies, that are at worst entertaining, and at best, rip-roaring, high concept, big-budget movie making of real quality. Recommended.--"Simon Brew"
